Chicago burlesque performer Shimmy LaRoux

Shimmy LaRoux

The second part of my “I had an extra day with my studio lighting” series.

As I previously mentioned, the weekend I shot Vaudezilla‘s promotional headshots just happened to be Labor Day weekend.  As such, I had an extra (free!) day with my rented studio equipment.  I previously posted photos from my shoot with Vayda Rhynstone, but I also shot with Shimmy LaRoux that day!

Chicago burlesque performer Shimmy LaRoux Shimmy, Vayda and I met at BurlyCon, the burlesque educational convention in Seattle.  Since then, I’ve also roomed with Shimmy at the Great Burlesque Exposition in Cambridge, MA.  She’s a very driven performer with a wonderful, effervescent personality, and a no-nonsense approach to the business of burlesque.  I tried to capture all of these aspects of her in our shoot together.

What did I say about burlesque performers and props?

I hope you like these images as much as I do!

Chicago burlesque performer Vayda Rhynstone

Vayda Rhynstone

Previously, I posted about a job I did for fellow local Chicago burlesque performer Vayda Rhynstone when she put together a pin-up tea party at The Allis Chicago.  While I still had access to the rented studio equipment that I used for Vaudezilla’s promotional headshots, I also set up a few private shoots, and Vayda was the first to sign up!

Chicago burlesque performer Vayda Rhynstone Vayda was a student of Studio L’Amour, and you can tell by the way she innately knows how to pose.  Studio L’Amour focuses their classes on knowing the right shapes and movements to flatter and accentuate each performer’s individual assets.

Also of note:  I initially thought, when she came in with this lace ensemble, that the bottom was pants.  It’s definitely a mermaid-cut skirt, but wouldn’t lace bellbottomed pants be amazing?  Or is that just me?

I love shooting with burlesque performers!  We always bring the best props!

I don’t post many pastie shots, but this one was too good to pass up.

I’m so pleased with how these turned out.  I haven’t had regular access to studio lighting equipment since I started shooting almost three years ago (but that’s changing soon! Shh!).  It’s always made me feel a little iffy about my worth, so knowing that I can walk into a studio and shoot images like these really bolsters my confidence.

Vaudezilla promotional photos

Holy procrastination, batman!

I shot promotional photos for Chicago burlesque troupe Vaudezilla in September, but I’m just now getting around to putting them up here.  Every year we get new headshots, but this was the first year I’ve been comfortable shooting them myself.

One of the fun bonus images I was asked to shoot, in addition to headshots, was one of our gals popping out of the giant cake prop we sometimes take to gigs.  Titty Perkins was perfect for this task!

This one’s kind of a cheater image.  While it was definitely shot, art-directed, and edited by “Singing Raven Photography”, it was actually physically shot by my second shooter, i.e. my long-suffering boyfriend, Kenneth.  I don’t have the patience to set up self-portraits, but fortunately for me, Kenneth is a comfortable photographer, and happy to let me art-direct when it comes to images of myself.

We only covered about half the troupe in this particular shoot, and I expect to be back at it in November for a second session to finish up the rest of the troupe!

Marisa at Hyde Park

Lifestyle photography- Marisa

Early in the summer, I had the opportunity to photograph Marisa, a friend of mine, and one of the numerous, lovely stage assistants Vaudezilla refers to as “vixens”.  She was looking to get some more time in front of a camera, since those of us who are habitually onstage and in the public eye kind of need to get used to it, sooner or later.  I, of course, was thrilled to oblige.  Marisa at Hyde ParkWe bundled ourselves into the car (probably too early for anyone’s liking), and drove down to Hyde Park, because the lakefront is beautiful down there, and it’s quite literally built on the bones of old Chicago.  (Seriously.  The Lake Michigan breakwater is built out of the stone blocks of long-demolished Chicago buildings, like the original Chicago Board of Trade building.)

Marisa at Hyde Park

This shoot was an especially good exercise for me, as I tend to work more with established performers/artists/models who don’t necessarily need my direction.  Growing up as a super-shy and awkward human being, sometimes giving direction doesn’t come the most natually to me, so I love having friends to practice on!

Tell me those aren’t the best socks ever.  Constellations!

The lakefront has plenty of strange outcroppings and weird architectural features to play on.  If you’d like to join me sometime for a photographic frolic (or maybe, you know, to commemorate an important life event like an engagement or couples session?), you can book me here!

Better Boobie Bureau Burlesque County Fair

Ok, ok.  I’ve given y’all some content, so you all know I can photograph.  But we ALL know posts sound way more fresh and interesting when we’re writing about the things we just finished and are still super excited about.  So I’m going to tell you all about my latest shoot.

BBB County Fair. Yes, this is a group act as tomatoes.

On August 14th, I was en invited to make my first trip to Uptown Underground to wholesale jerseys photograph the Better Boobie Bureau’s Burlesque County Fair.  First of Ms. all, this show was FAR more hilarious than it had any right to be.  Secondly, it ended with broasted chicken, which is pretty much the best thing ever.  So it was a win wholesale jerseys any way you slice it.

The night featured performances from some of my favorite members of the Chicago burlesque (and vaudeville!) community, including Boobs Radley, Lady Ali cheap jerseys Mode, Phaedra Black, and, of course, Plucky Rosenthal.

Plucky Rosenthal. The Jewish star of stage and... stage.

Lady Ali Mode. How adorable is Lady Ali Mode’s cherry hat?

Closing the show was none other than my friend Marci Vousplait.  Marci and wholesale nba jerseys I took several of our first burlesque classes together (although she debuted création several months new before I did.)  I’ll admit, the last time I saw this particular act was years ago when she was still workshopping it, and to see the finished product blew me away.

Marci Vousplait

Though I periodically shoot for Vaudezilla when I’m not performing, the Better Boobie Bureau’s Burlesque County Fair is only the second non-Vaudezilla show Modelle I’ve shot in the last few years.  I love getting the chance to head out into the community at large, and I get to catch up with some performers I haven’t gotten to Tea see in a while.  If you’ve got a show (burlesque, theatre, dance, whatever!) that needs archival photography, you can contact me about Kung booking availability and rates here!

Early this past spring, I to was asked cheap jerseys by a friend of mine to document a vintage-themed tea party downtown.  She’s a burlesque-performer and Vine floral/event designer.  I’m a burlesque-performer and photographer.  We met at BurlyCon last October, and cheap nba jerseys the event was a natural fit.

We met for tea at The Allis, a beautiful, sunlit space in the West Loop.  The spread was luxurious, but, being spring in the cheap nfl jerseys city, the sun sets at about 4pm, vaters so we were fighting 200 the oncoming twilight.  Still, I think I was the able to capture some good shots.

Vaudezilla’s Ms. Mister Junior and Mia D. Vine

It’s alive!

I’m going to start this here blog (aside from my “welcome to my blog” post… I guess.) by working through the massive backlog of work that I have saved in wholesale jerseys my life.  See, I had a blog over on my old website, but, like that iteration of the site, the blog was… bad.  I always felt like I sounded like an idiot, which made no sense because I spend FAR too much time writing things for cheap NFL jerseys the internet to sound like an idiot talking to the internet.

#Me by Singing Raven Photography

The first shoot I’m choosing to share with you all here is one I did for Mia D. Vine and Ms. Mister Junior, who, at the time, were both members of the Chicago burlesque troupe Vaudezilla.  Mia is now an independent performer and model.  This shoot happened in the spring of 2014, a year in which I made very little work, due to my decision to commit My to doing one thing extremely well before adding other things back into my life.

#Me by Singing Raven Photography

In any case, we shot on what was maybe the las first warm day of spring, a sun-drenched day in April, on the balcony of a downtown high-rise.  It was the apartment of a friend of Mia’s, one of the first times I was given a location to work with that was neither Vaudezilla’s wholesale NFL jerseys studio space (a venue with which you will quickly become Rollenb?cke familiar.) nor a random street that to I had scouted myself.

#Me by Singing Raven Photography

The photos came from the midwest, but, like Mia, felt like the West Coast personified, with wholesale NBA jerseys golden sunlight and endless blue skies.  Not bad work for an April Gaziantep day and a balcony that was maybe 2 and a half feet wide by six feet long.  #Me by Singing Raven Photography

Both of these two are phenomenal models to work with, inventive, dynamic, and self-sufficient.  It’s no wonder I’m using them as the face of my site, right?

Welcome to my new website!

Hey everyone!  Welcome to the new Singing Raven Photography!  It’s been a bit of a hike getting Longue to this point, what with the numerous computer and internet issues that have been cheap jerseys plaguing me lately, but I think I’m finally nearly finished formatting in everything and getting the hang of cheap nba jerseys WordPress.  (maybe.  we’ll see.)

For the sake of wholesale jerseys China having some content here, I’d like to recap one of my absolute favorite shoots.  In the spring of 2014, I got to do a wonderful shoot with Mia D. Vine and Mister Junior in a beautiful downtown Chicago location.  The shoot was a concept shoot for their burlesque duet, #ME, and I love the sun-drenched summery quality to the final images.

The shoot could have happened in sunny southern California instead cheap mlb jerseys of April in Chicago.  I didn’t accomplish much, photographically speaking, in 2014.  I shot a lot of live performances, but very little else.  Yet this session was a very powerful wholesale jerseys reminder of the kind of images I like to produce, the kind of images Hard I want to produce.  Dynamic, stylish, stylized.

What can I do for you?
